AFP Called in As Smith Urges Restraint in Whaling Clash

Mr Smith today said the latest incident was an "unwelcome development", while reiterating his condemnation of any action that could lead to injury.

"I again call on all parties to exercise restraint, that includes restraint in the face of provocation," he told AAP.

He said the Rudd government had instructed Australian embassy officials in Tokyo to relay to Japanese authorities their utmost concern at the latest encounter.

Mr Smith said the AFP had been asked to review the series of clashes between whalers and anti-whaling activists.

"It's difficult, if not impossible, to make judgments about the validity or the weight of claim or counterclaim in the Southern Ocean many thousands of miles away," he said.

"The Australian Federal Police are cooperating with Japanese authorities in evaluating previous incidents, and I assume this most recent incident will also be subject to that and will also be evaluated."

An AFP spokeswoman confirmed police were looking into the matter.

Archives for: January 2008

We have become a family of chargers. Not the credit card variety, but the cell phone, digital camera battery, ipod kind of chargers.

That's why one of my favorite Christmas presents not only helped me organize those electric items, but also made a corner of my kitchen look better.

The multi-charging unit, painted white, just like my woodwork, fits neatly in a space on the counter and hides a power strip inside. I plug in the unsightly chargers and all I can see are the tiny plug-ins.

At night, we line up our electronic neccessities and know right where they are every morning, charged up and ready to go.

It makes me feel so twenty-first century.

Legend Buddy Guy still has the blues

The one-day festival will play host to some impressive national and international names in blues, reggae, funk, roots, pop and swamp rock.

Alongside Guy, KT Tunstall, Keb Mo, Wilco, Ian Brown, Midge Marsden, Hollie Smith, Pluto, Little Bushman and The Checks are all set to perform.

While the line-up is an impressive range of talent, it cannot match Guy's musical legacy.

He has been called the bridge between the blues and rock and roll and has performed with Chicago electric blues pioneers Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf, inspiring musicians such as Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix.

Known for his showmanship on stage, Guy is happy his music is still finding an audience.

"Music seems to make people happy, if you are fortunate enough to draw a crowd to do that.

After campus gets ‘juicier,’ Yale considers legal options

A site is not responsible for users' posts only if it merely conveys information and has no role in editing the content as a matter of policy and practice, she said. But JuicyCampus' encouragement of racy content, she said, could make it responsible for the resulting posts.

Ivester said JuicyCampus does not interfere with content, except for removing spam and copyrighted material, which he said is consistent with federal law.

Aftab also said JuicyCampus could be sued for consumer fraud for violating its “always anonymous" slogan.

The Web site did track down a user at Loyola Marymount University in California when he posted a bomb threat in December 2007, and provided the information to the authorities, Ivester confirmed.

If JuicyCampus has the capability to track posts in some cases, it has a legal obligation to do so consistently, Aftab said.

San Bruno man founds Church of Reality

SAN BRUNO — Seconds after Marc Perkel's mind had shifted into a higher state of thinking, he had a revelation: The Church of Reality.

Perkel was relaxing alone at home nine years ago when the light bulb went on.

"I was smoking a little weed, and I was thinking about religion," said the now 52-year-old realist. "The name kind of popped in my head. But I had a hard time grasping the idea that no one (had) thought about it. Quite frankly, that aspect (has) never gone away."

The next morning, The Church of Reality was born.

"If it's real, we believe in it," said Perkel, who is self-employed and works in Web hosting and spam filtering. "Anything true will stand up to scrutiny. We're not a faith-based religion. We're doubt-based. The Church of Reality is a new kind of religion."

The American Religious Identification Survey, performed in 2001 by the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, found that the non-believer population at that time comprised roughly 14 percent of Americans.

From the Editor :

He was eyeing off one of the chicks and asked me whether he should give her his number or email. I suggested email (being overseas and all) so I wonder how lucky he got or whether he actually gave a crap what I thought. And ....good old Shoaib, got to hand it to him, he knows how to pick up the ladies. He was back and forth, chatting up different babes and I must admit, the ladies seemed to be giggling like school girls when he left (probably to chat up a dozen more).
