| Toy retailer entertains web upgrade
Independent toy retailer The Entertainer has completed a website refresh and contracted ecommerce specialist Escalate Retail to provide a software suite for the back-end. The implementation cost just over 400,000, including overall hosting, development and license costs, in the first year but since the system went live in October 2007, one of the retailer's sites, thetoyshop.com, has increased sales by 147 per cent, according to The Entertainer's online marketing and ecommerce manager Richard Bewley. silicon.com Retail & Leisure Get the latest retail and leisure news straight to your inbox. Sonic Foundry chief upbeat
Sonic Foundry officials say sales prospects for its Mediasite products are "absolutely terrific" and the Madison company expects to break even later this year. "Our customers love our technology. We have outstanding technology; it's the best in the market," chief executive officer Rimas Buinevicius told about 75 people at Sonic Foundry's annual shareholders meeting Thursday at Monona Terrace. Colleges and universities are Sonic's primary customers, including University of Michigan, Arizona State University, Stanford and Cornell. Mediasite feeds presentations over the Internet and archives them, and that's especially useful for students juggling work and family responsibilities, too, Buinevicius said. "Students want this technology, they need it," he said. "We think there's a huge market out there." .
Monday wild card
I try to keep up with the blog, but I'm not going to sit here and pretend to know what I'm talking about when it comes to Gozzer Ranch yacht wars or Marty Fortier. I'm doing this in addition to other work, so I'm not able to spend much time crusing around looking for things to post. And so - your help this week is crucial to keeping the blog flowing. Don't be shy about suggesting items to post, and please don't worry about insulting my intelligence or whatever by explaining at length why a particular post is noteworthy. This is your community, after all. Drop me a line at kenp@spokesman.com. Portrait of DFO courtesty of Brodh2o. .
Jay Leno Drives Street-Legal Go-Kart, Lightweight Spors Cars
It's sort of like a fancy watch with a see-through dial. The insides are exposed for all to see. When you depress the brake pedal, you can watch the brake caliper grip the disc, then see the rotor heat up and glow. It's wild. Though not exactly cheap (the Atom costs a cool 88 grand), it is somewhat of a bargain among speedy exotics. It can accelerate faster than cars costing 10 times as much (like the Ferrari Enzo), has catlike reflexes and goes from 60 to 0 in the blink of an eye. What more do you want? When I first approached Brammo about purchasing an Atom, the vehicle was only available in the United Kingdom and the company was using a Honda Civic Type R powerplant, which is not available here in the United States. I asked, "What would it take to get an American engine in this thing?" So they replaced the Type R with GM's 2.0-liter Ecotec Stage 3.
