| IBM’s ‘Blue Cloud’ signals the tipping point for enterprise IT ...
I recall a front page story I wrote for InfoWorld back in 1997. At the time there were still plenty of naysayers about whether websites were a plaything or a business tool. There was talk of clicks and mortar, and how the mortar would always determine business outcomes. And then General Motors — the very definition of a traditional big business — unveiled an expansive website that fully embraced the Internet across its businesses. We at InfoWorld wrote about GM's embrace of the Web then as a corporate tipping point, from which there was no going back. Clicks became mainstream for businesses. Case closed. And so it is today, with IBM's announcement of Blue Cloud — an approach that not only talks the services talk, but walks the services walk. We are all at the tipping point where IT will be delivered of, by and for services.

Act of kindness produces close shave
Last year, Larry Durian jumped into his first St. Baldrick's Day activity head first — so to speak — at the urging of a colleague. This time around, the Canton man is being led by his heart. And for good reason. Durian volunteered to have his head shaved last March at Canton's St. Baldrick's Day, a meaningful alternative to St. Patrick's Day as well as a major fund-raiser to fight childhood cancer. He thinks that good deed just may have saved his life. ''Larry Durian was shaved and the stylist saw a spot on his head that she suggested he have looked at,'' Sue Stevenson, veteran planner of Stark County's St. Baldrick's Day activities, said about last year's party with a purpose. ''Sure enough, he had skin cancer, and he would not have probably found it if he hadn't shaved his head for our event.'' Durian, who is director of the pretrial department of Stark County Family Court, was all too happy to talk about the serendipitous circumstances.
phpBB3 takes giant strides from predecessor
As the world gets smaller, security threats and spam seem only to grow. PhpBB is the open source Internet Forum package that underlies a majority of the online forums on the Internet and its creators take their motto "creating communities" very seriously. All communities need to interact freely and safely, and although a long time coming, the latest release, phpBB3, has several increased security measures, as well as enhanced collaboration features and mobile optimisation. Computerworld Australia catches up with some key players behind the software: Henry Sudhof, Adam Reyher and Meik Sievertsen. They discuss the development process they use, the latest phpBB release and what they are doing to address the growing wave of spam and security threats. Is there any way to guage how many people use phpBB? Henry Sudhof: For Open Source software that is a very difficult question to answer.
Boating isn't all plain sailing
Taking to the waterways in luxury floating hotels is more popular than ever, as Brian Johnston finds. WHEN Jerome K. Jerome wrote the charming novel Three Men In A Boat in 1889, it sparked a fashion for rowing holidays on the Thames. These days, rivers are still attracting travellers, though in rather more style. Recently there has been a surge in new luxury river cruises and new itineraries. Indeed, tour companies can barely keep up with the demand. a.yellow:link {color: #FFCC00} a.yellow:visited {color: #FFCC00} td.celltwo { font-size: 12px; padding-top: 25px; padding-bottom: 5px; padding-left: 10px; padding-right: 10px; color: white; font-style: arial; } td.cellone { padding-bottom: 5px; padding-right: 10px; bgcolor: white } .

O'Reilly Last Night
As always, I'm on the free-speech side of this issue. Each site's proprietor has a responsibility to not allow his comment sections to become racist, sexist, violent cesspools, and some sites are better at fostering a decent comment culture than others. But just because some sites become nasty is not a reason to demand regulation of the Internet, as Bill sometimes suggests, or to suggest that because some people in a comment section are juvenile jerks, that a site is Nazi-like in any way. The best way to deal with coarse commentary on the Internet is to point it out, shine a little sunlight, and push site proprietors to foster cultures of decency on their own sites. Comments sections can be nasty places, and there are very few sites that can claim theirs are totally and completely clean (including this one), no matter what moderation policies are in place.
Jeff Thelen's Blog
I live in a rural area and have a satalite dish as well as an antenna for local channels. (The dish is not used for local channels) When there is heavey cloud cover or heavey rain or snow the signal from the satalite is lost. I rely on my local stations for weather warnings, will the signal be lost with the new system when the weather gets bad?I actually don't know. You might want to drop Mikel Lauber a line about this. He's covered the issue extensively. His e-mail is mlauber@wsaw.com.JWith HDTV, what happens with are antennas???Again, a question for Mikel.JYour exclusive interview with Obama was a paid political ploy by the Obama campaign. His campaign pays for the satellite time, and its only just as a responsible journalist if you give "equal time" to both sides. I do not fault Mr. Lauber for doing the interview, but the station is misrepresenting just how "exclusive" it is.I'd agree with you if not for a couple of things.
