Toy retailer entertains web upgrade

Independent toy retailer The Entertainer has completed a website refresh and contracted ecommerce specialist Escalate Retail to provide a software suite for the back-end.

The implementation cost just over 400,000, including overall hosting, development and license costs, in the first year but since the system went live in October 2007, one of the retailer's sites, thetoyshop.com, has increased sales by 147 per cent, according to The Entertainer's online marketing and ecommerce manager Richard Bewley.

The system replaces a bespoke implementation made before thetoyshop.com and The Entertainer's other brand Gadgetshop were acquired, which was deemed too inflexible to be able to cope with the peaks and troughs of traffic.

Their efforts earned them second place in the 2006-07 FBLA state competition and the chance to go to national competition.

And that's where it ended.

Sort of.

This year, Denise Russo, and Hailey Mackin, both 16, have taken the wheel of the CARS project. Last week, the two conducted mandatory assemblies in the school theater for all River Ridge High School students.

Denise and Hailey were understandably nervous when they took to the stage. Not an unusual emotion when some of your peers - perhaps the "invincible" kind - are laughing it up in the back rows.

USDA Recalls 143M Pounds Of California Beef

CBS News consumer safety correspondent Nancy Cordes first reported on Westland/Hallmark's use of sick, or "downer" cows, on a January broadcast of the CBS Evening News.Cordes reported that meat-industry officials said at the time that there was no way to know if the cows actually entered the meat supply and that ailing livestock would have had to pass a gauntlet of USDA veterinarians and inspectors before being slaughtered and sent to market. But Secretary of Agriculture Ed Schafer now says his department has evidence that Westland did not routinely contact its veterinarian when cattle became non-ambulatory after passing inspection, violating health regulations."Because the cattle did not receive complete and proper inspection, Food Safety and Inspection Service has determined them to be unfit for human food and the company is conducting a recall," Schafer said in a statement.A phone message left for Westland president Steve Mendell was not immediately returned.Federal officials suspended operations at Westland/Hallmark after an undercover Humane Society video surfaced showing crippled and sick animals being shoved with forklifts. Two former employees were charged Friday.
