| Is Tory plan to vet films censorship?
If tax credits are up for review at a time after the film has been produced (which is when you apply for them--it's impossible to beforehand) the banks will hire risk-assessment consultants to review the film for potential 'policy' deviations before they lend the money to the production to finance those same tax credits. Otherwise the banks will sometimes lose their money. No matter how fair and impartial the committee is or will be does not change the fact that the mechanism of the money for film and television production only works through bank lending, which this Bill will make equally more difficult to attain for all, under all circumstances. Please remove the provisions of a review process for tax credits, it is not only unwise but also stupid. Sincerely, Carl Laudan Director of "Sheltered Life" .
Census Bureau: Companies spend $251 Billion on network and computer ...
US businesses spent $251 billion on information and communication technology equipment and computer software in 2006, an increase of a little over 6% from 2005, the US Census Bureau reported today. Not surprisingly the rapid pace of technological advances in computers, telephones, fax machines and electromedical apparatus and network gear, have resulted in these assets being replaced much more quickly than other types of equipment, the bureau said in its latest Information and Communication Technology Survey. Many companies write off the full cost of these assets during the year of purchase rather than depreciating the cost over two or more years, the study found. Of the total spending in 2006 on information and communication technology equipment and computer software, or e-business infrastructure, noncapitalized spending accounted for $90.8 billion (36%), and capitalized spending accounted for $160 billion (64%).

Attorney General under President George W. Bush, and conservative state Supreme Court Justice Stephen N. Limbaugh, Jr., cousin of prominent right-wing radio commentator Rush Limbaugh. Political opposition and loss of funding killed the program in Massachusetts, which was initially successful in the early 1970s. National experts on juvenile crime urge states to invest in this type of counseling and rehabilitation, instead of confinement and punishment, as a way to stem adult crime and incarcerations. But for the last 20 years, most states have gone in the opposite direction, said Liz Ryan, director of the Campaign for Youth Justice. A series of high-profile youth crimes in the mid-1980s spurred most states to adopt tough juvenile crime laws, which resulted in overcrowded corrections facilities, scandals over abusive and punitive treatment and corrections budgets that often surpassed the cost of public education, Ryan said.

Friday Updates
As I blogged about here earlier today, it's a big day in the fight against breast cancer. We just learned that Genentech's Avastin drug, already used to fight some cancers, has now been approved, by the FDA, to treat breast cancer. Breast cancer advocates are very happy about the decision, which helps to clear the way for another weapon in the battle against breast cancer and also puts money into the pockets of Genentech (DNA) investors. Already a big moneymaker for the company, Avastin now has another big market to try and conquer. There's still a ways to go before Avastin can prove that it's a sure-shot way to beat breast cancer, but today's FDA ruling means it's well on its way. We'll keep you posted as the Bay Area's biggest biotech company continues to do well, by doing good.
Right place, time
Ford was also a good friend of Ferguson's, the two men having served together as part of the Junior Chamber, or Jaycees, program. "I called Wendell, who was running for governor at the time, and arranged a meeting with Western & Southern at the governor's mansion in Frankfort," he said. "Wendell's assistant was a guy by the name of Walter D. Huddleston - he later became a U.S. senator - and he was a college roommate of mine in the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. Boy, did I ever have a handle on the political situation." During the meeting, Ford committed to building Mall Road, as long as he was elected governor. "Well, Wendell was elected and shortly after, Sears & Roebuck gave its commitment to the mall," Ferguson said. "Man, did that change the picture.
Hockey wives and abortion
They have cute websites designed to appeal to teenage girls, lots of advice about boys — giggle — and sites on MySpace. They take great care to look like kindly counselling centres. In fact, they exist solely to prevent abortion. Planned Parenthood told me it frequently talks to women who went to these apparently welcoming places for counselling on the three options — abortion, adoption and parenting. The group says women report feeling badly treated. Charity's rewards The problem is worse than just some hockey fans inadvertently donating to a cause they may oppose — that is a personal issue between a fan and her team (in my case, the Canadiens). What irks is that our tax dollars are involved. The raffle money is channelled through the Sens Foundation, the team's registered charity arm, which is matching every dollar raised by The Better Halves.
