DirectX is a collection of tools that facilitate communication between hardware and Microsoft operating systems; all Windows release since 95, and the Xbox and Xbox 360 operating systems, use it. Each DirectX release brings new graphics technologies and performance improvements, ideally leading to increasingly visually compelling software. The arrival of DirectX 10 was much anticipated. Unfortunately, it's also been heavily criticized. DirectX 10 was released as an exclusive for Microsoft's latest desktop OS, Windows Vista, leaving Windows XP (and 2000) users comfortable with their current setup chagrined. .
Sun backs Web 2.0 startups
Sun Microsystems has put its weight behind up and coming web 2.0 companies with the launched this week of a new initiative designed to provide UK startups with discounts on Sun technology and services. The Sun Startup Essentials programme, which was originally launched in the States, will help eligible companies purchase a range of discounted products and services, including Sun Fire x64 servers and Sun Fire servers with CoolThreads technology, according to the firm. Startups under the scheme can also rent discounted web hosting infrastructure from Sun partners Layered Technologies, NaviSite and NTT Europe Online, and gain access to free open source software including Sun's own. "They will also get free technical support – the idea is to help startups make good decisions up front so as their needs go up they can sustain higher traffic," said Sun's Juan Carlos Soto.

In iPhoto 6 you can find it here: your user folder /Pictures/iPhoto Library/Data/ year / roll number . In earlier versions of iPhoto, thumbnails are in the date folder's Thumbs folder. This picture is small consolation, I know, but in cases where you've lost a shot that you treasure, it may be better than nothing. Still not satisfied? If you're a pack rat who doesn't take a lot of pictures, check your media cards to see whether you left a copy of the image there. Or if you've got a video iPod, perhaps you've stored a copy on it. Count yourself blessed if you've enabled the Include Full-Resolution Photos option in the Photos portion of the iPod preference pane. .

BIND 9 DNS Administration Reference Book
This book comes to me in an unusual way. I received an email from the publisher and editor asking if I'd be willing to review BIND 9 DNS Administration Reference Book. Ok, that's not unusual. In fact, it happens to me all the time. What is unusual is that I'd never heard of Reed Media Services before. One reason is that they seem to be a smaller publishing house that was originally started to "print newsletter publishing, online publishing (including related software design), and providing related internet hosting services". The other reason is that they've only produced two books thus far (The OpenBSD PF Packet Filter Book is the other one).

Drakes Creek students win academic contest
Drakes Creek Middle School won four individual events and took first place in Quick Recall to capture first place in the District 19 Governor's Cup academic competition Jan. 26. Drakes Creek scored 48 points to finish ahead of runner-up Henry F. Moss Middle School with 33 points.Individual winners for Drakes Creek were Austin Taing in mathematics and science, Seth Stewart in composition and Callie Allison in arts and humanities. Drakes Creek also had three second-place finishers - Nathaniel Powers in science, Mallory Clouse in language arts and Emily Powell in arts and humanities.The top scorers for Henry F. Moss Middle School were Matt Clouse (first in social studies), Alec Minnicks (third in mathematics and fourth in science) and Allyn Goately (second in composition).The other individual winner was David Sekora of Franklin-Simpson Middle School in language arts.
