| Rangers' McCarthy hits a roadblock
It kept hurting and didn't loosen up. I don't know what else to say about it. It's not fun." McCarthy will be evaluated today in Surprise by Rangers team physician Keith Meister. General manager Jon Daniels and manager Ron Washington said they aren't leaping to any conclusions about McCarthy's status. McCarthy was expected to start the Rangers' fourth game of the season April 4 at Anaheim in 27 days. The injury already caused the right-hander to miss 15 days of spring training. A similar layoff would give him only 12 days to get ready for that first start of the season. The Rangers have some flexibility. They won't need a fifth starter until April 12. If McCarthy isn't ready by then, Luis Mendoza likely would be the first alternate. "We haven't talked about any plans," Washington said.

Trend Micro Sees Growth of Underground Cybercrime Economy
CUPERTINO, Calif., Feb. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Trend Micro Incorporated TSE: 4704, a global leader in Internet content security, published today its 2007 Threat Report and 2008 Forecast. According to research from Trend Micro's TrendLabs(SM), hackers are intensifying their attacks on legitimate Web sites. The number of compromised Web sites are slowly outnumbering malicious ones created specifically by cyber criminals. It debunks the adage to "not visit questionable sites" because even trusted Web sites such as those belonging to Fortune 500 companies, schools and government organizations can hold malware. An underground malware industry has carved itself a thriving market by exploiting the trust and confidence of Web users. The Russian Business Network, for example, was notorious all year for hosting illegal businesses including child pornography, phishing and malware distribution sites.

Profile: Palo Altans for Government Effectiveness
Civic engagement didn't just pop onto the city's 2008 priority list. Since 2003, a group known as PAGE (Palo Altans for Government Effectiveness) -- created by current Mayor Larry Klein, architect John Northway and a core of other well-known locals -- has been working to promote respectful involvement with local government. The group emerged during a rancorous period in Palo Alto's political history, motivated by a divisiveness that had overcome civil civic processes, Klein and Northway said at the time. The group founders believed that effective engagement and dialogue would help the community address critical issues. In addition, PAGE has espoused a particular interest in involving and respecting staff members of local public agencies. In 2004, through a series of community meetings, the group developed a list of 13 "Guiding Principles for Palo Alto." Available as an appendix on PAGE's Web site, the principles include: "Be willing to compromise," "Build relationships ..." and "Once a solution is reached, support it and move on." In the spring of 2007, PAGE released the paper, "Building Civic Engagement and Social Capital in Palo Alto: Making a Good Community Better." It hosted two forums that spring on community building and interacting with the government.
Bush Failed Policy Domestic
Bush not tops a new list, his failures are fundamentally different from the likes of Johnson, Hoover, or Coolidge. Sunday, December 9: Gregg Gordon: Why I Didn't Buy A Dell, Dude: An Open Letter to the Eighth Richest Man in America (17 comments) An appeal to the rumored conscience of one of President Bush's wealthiest supporters. Thursday, December 6: Richard Clark: The Vile Economic Consequences of Mr. Bush Repercussions from Bush will be felt beyond the lifetime of anyone reading this page. Our tax code has become hideously biased in favor of the rich; our national debt will probably have grown 70% by the time Bush leaves office; we have a swelling cascade of mortgage defaults and a record near-$850 billion trade deficit, and oil prices higher than ever. We must kick our addiction to oil but are becoming ever more dependent.

The kinder, gentler energy superpower
In the face of US demand for Canadian oil, the greatest challenge we face is maintaining our sovereignty and democracy. Already that demand has dictated for us Canadian policy on greenhouse gas emissions and the SPP (which is principally about securing energy security and prosperity for the US). The Canadian electorate's opinion is simply bypassed and the important long-term decisions on the future of our country are made behind closed doors by unelected elites. For example, it was a Jan. 2006 meeting in Houston, Texas, kept secret from the Canadian public for over a year before Radio Canada got a hold of the minutes, that called for a "fivefold expansion" in oilsands production in a relatively "short time span" and encouraged decision-makers "to streamline the regulatory approval process" with a "one-stop-shop" for project proposals to facilitate that expansion.
A new stage in the world class struggle: November-December 1995
In December 1995, David Walsh travelled to Europe as part of an international team of reporters to provide on-the-spot coverage of the massive strike wave in France. They studied the strike movement and the political crisis it produced and interviewed strikers, union officials and representatives of various "left" organisations, as well as non-strikers from various layers of the population. This pamphlet was first published as a series or articles. It presents a detailed analysis of the strike movement and the role played by the various unions, political parties and tendencies. It addresses a number of questions: Why did this movement erupt in France? Why has there been no comparable movement to this point in the US, although the attacks on social programmes carried out there go far beyond those proposed by the French government? What do these events portend for the future development of the class struggle in France, Europe and internationally? What have these events revealed about the revolutionary capacity of the working class, as well as the critical political problems which must be overcome? French workers in revolt: Contents What sparked the strike movement? A mass movement of social solidarity Political problems of the strike movement How the labour bureaucracy stifled the strike movement The culture of opportunism The spectre of a European-wide movement The significance of the strike movement Apendix: Two footnotes on the radicals Chronology Political parties and trade unions in France What sparked the strike movement? For three and a half weeks in November and December, masses of French workers did battle with the right wing government of President Jacques Chirac and Prime Minister Alain Juppé.
