| Migrating birds fill the skies in annual rite of spring
The eagle nesting season begins in late January and early February with eaglets hatching in April. Wildlife experts do not encourage the public to observe eagle nests because this could scare the birds off.The eagle migration begins when the ice on major waterways begins melting in mid to late March, Klebe said.Other larger birds that pass through or return to this area in the spring include wading species of blue herons, American bitterns and snowy egrets and birds of prey, osprey and cormorants.Reporter contact informationCynthia Beaudette 563-262-0527cynthia.beaudette@muscatinejournal.comOnline: Learn more about the Iowa Audubon Society at —http://www.iowaaudubon.org/main/default.aspIowa Birds —http://www.iowabirds.org/Important Birding Sites in Muscatine County, compiled by the Iowa Audubon SocietyWhat: White Oak Swamp Preserve Where: From Muscatine, at the intersection of Iowa Highway 38 and the U.S.
The Nanny Campaigns For Clinton
Nydia Velasquez and Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion at the Ambar Room. In advance of that last event, Clinton's campaign announced she had been endorsed by Latina PAC, a New York-based group of professional Hispanic women, who, as Azi reports, were not upset about her position on Gov. Eliot Spitzer's now-defunct plan to let illegal immigrants get driver's licenses. .
Words fly between La Russa and Slaten
But a skirmish between Cards manager Tony La Russa and talk-show host Kevin Slaten is simmering. Slaten wanted La Russa to be a guest recently on his afternoon drive-time program at KFNS (590 AM, 100.7 FM) but La Russa turned him down — as he has in the past. Slaten has been harsh on the air about La Russa, lately about him overseeing many players who have been tied to using performance-enhancing substances — including players who have been signed by the club after the release this winter of the Mitchell Report, which investigated use of such substances in baseball. .
Reports: Syria Blocks Domestic Access to Facebook
Lebanon's daily As-Safir reported that Facebook was blocked on Nov. 18. It said the authorities took the step because Israelis have been entering Syria-based groups. Human rights groups have regularly criticized Syrian authorities for blocking opposition sites and Internet sites critical of President Bashar Assad's government. .
MTB News & Racing Round-up
The Multivan Merida Biking Team is about to kick off its competitive season. The focus is clearly on Norway's Gunn-Rita Dahle Flesjå, who had to quit racing last year in June for health reasons. Having recovered, the seven-time World champion and Athen's Olympic gold medal winner is back and ready to compete with the world's elite for the first time in Brescia. Dahle Flesjå will be in Brescia for the first race of Italy's cross country series. Despite her long absence, many experts consider her as the odds-on favourite. At the same race, Austria's Robert Gehbauer, Dahle Flesjå's team-mate and former Junior World Champion is also scheduled to line up. On the other hand, Germany's Moritz Milatz will stay in Cyprus with his national team preparing for the season to come.
Colombian president says cross-border raid was justified because ...
Colombian President Alvaro Uribe's defense of his actions came during a three-hour session with news media representatives Wednesday night but his office did not authorize release of his comments until Thursday. The conservative leader expressed frustration at what he called inaction by Ecuador's leftist government over Colombian guerrilla camps in its territory."What does one do when bandits are shooting from the other side and the government doesn't do anything?" Uribe asked. "It's my job to defend 43 million Colombians."Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa has said his troops have raided dozens of rebel camps, but Colombian officials say the guerrillas are always tipped off so they can escape. Uribe said he didn't notify Correa of Saturday's attack because "I was sure that the operation would have failed."Uribe said the raid was the sixth since his 2002 election that was aimed at Raul Reyes, a top leader in the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC.

As Pfizer seeks to sell its 15-acre plant site in Williamsburg to a private developer, Assemblyman Vito Lopez, the chairman of the Assembly's housing committee, is pressing the pharma giant on affordable housing. Obama Che Guevara Flag ‘Scandal’
That's the Cuban flag with the image of Ernesto Che Guevara superimposed on it. It's tacked onto the wall of an office in Barack Obama's Houston campaign headquarters. An office belonging, apparently, to a low level staffer who's in charge of setting up the office. I'm immediately reminded of a line from Charlie Daniels' breakout hit, Uneasy Rider: "I betchya he's even got a commie flag tacked up on the wall inside of his garage." The classic response: "I ain't even got a garage, you can call home and ask my wife!" But I digress. Here are the headlines of some select reactions to the Obama flag flap: Ed Morrissey: "A Flag Obama Supporters Salute?" Charles Johnson: "Che Guevara Flags in Obama's Houston Office" Texas Communists For Obama (Apparently They Were Out of Himmler) Matt Bramanti: "Obama office adores psychotic Marxist thug" Ed Driscoll: "Sixties Radical Chic, Frozen In Amber" Curt@Flopping Aces and Don Surber weigh in with "Che Obama" Michael Goldfarb: "Che You Can Believe In" Morrissey is simultaneously fair and not: Does Obama know his Houston supporters honor a terrorist in his campaign office? I'm sure he doesn't.
Recession, mes-mession
Among the bad news, hype and hostile opinion in the March 2 edition of your paper, one article stood out to me as positive: "Getting set to map North County" by SDNEDC (San Diego North Economic Development Council) CEO Gary Knight. The concept of mapping assets of North County instead of cataloguing "concerns" is an outstanding change of pace and should be applauded strongly.Recent studies, as revealed in the book "Strength Finder," indicate that success comes much easier when people and organizations focus on core strengths rather than striving to correct weaknesses. Would this be true for our region also? How would we know without a map of our assets?Nothing happens in government or at home until someone makes the sale. Economic strength is the only source of the funds for all the concerns expressed ad nauseam in the press.

The Joy of Commuting and Other Stuff
Why do weather Web sites list the current temperature and then right next to it say "feels like" another temp? And the numbers are usually very close. Do they do this so they can cover their butts if they are way off? Here's what AccuWeather has on its Web site for the temp in NYC right now: 44°F RealFeel® 38°F Weather.com 44 Feels like 39 Does a meterologist stand outside with a thermometer, get a reading and then look to a colleague and say, "I don't know. It says 49, but I really think it feels like 47. What do you think?" If only this scale applied to other situations in life. "Your coffee is $1.75." "But it feels like it should cost $1.57." "The scale says I weigh 143." "But I really feel 129" In case you're wondering, Weather.com says it's currently 77 degrees in Los Angeles and feels like...77! Hmmm.
